U.S. Route 301 passes through the center of town. Downtown Rocky Mount is 6 miles (10 km) to the north, and Wilson is 12 miles (19 km) to the south.

The racial makeup of the town was 39.45% White, 58.65% African American, 0.21% Native American, 0.08% Asian, 0.08% Pacific Islander, 0.54% from other races, and 0.99% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 1.94% of the population.
